The country code Top Level Domain .TW for Republic of China (not to be confused with People's Republic of China) was introduced in 1989. The abbreviation .TW stands for Taiwan which is commonly known name of the Republic of China. The ccTLD was opened to the public for direct registrations on November 1st 2005. Prior that date direct registrations were possible only for Second Level Domains like .COM.TW, ORG.TW and IDV.TW. The domain extension does not have registration restrictions (unlike .COM.TW, ORG.TW and IDV.TW) and it is favorable to be used for wide range of applications.
